Kokoweef Cave Coral: The Last Great Collection
At Dig Dive Discover, we're always searching for rare, historic, and difficult-to-obtain lapidary material. Sometimes that means diving for fossils ourselves or digging new localities. Other times, the greatest discoveries are hiding in old collections.
This collection of Kokoweef Cave Coral came from exactly that.
In 2026, we acquired the last remaining uncut collection of Kokoweef Cave Coral from legendary California rockhound Ron Everett, who spent more than fifty years in the lapidary industry. Why This Collection Matters
Ron estimates he recovered roughly three times the amount of material that ultimately remained in his personal collection. Nearly all of it was cut and sold over the decades.
What makes this collection exceptional is that Ron intentionally kept his finest specimens, selling the more common material instead.
That means this collection is believed to represent not only the largest remaining uncut collection of Kokoweef Cave Coral, but also the highest-quality material Ron recovered during seven years of collecting.
Although other collectors occasionally visited Kokoweef, Ron explained that he was responsible for recovering the vast majority of the significant specimens that entered the lapidary market.

Ron Everett's Kokoweef Story
Approximately 250 miles northeast of Los Angeles, Kokoweef Peak rises above the Ivanpah Mountains in San Bernardino County, California. During the 1970s, miners searching for the legendary Lost River of Gold blasted portions of the Kokoweef cave system apart.
Rather than allowing the destroyed formations to be lost forever, Ron salvaged the fallen stalactites before they were buried, blasted, or otherwise destroyed.
Unlike most cave formations (which should never be collected) these specimens were recovered during a historic salvage operation from areas that had already been irreversibly impacted by mining activity making them legal and ethical to own.
Ron estimated he made well over 250 collecting trips, putting more than 100,000 miles on his truck traveling between his home and Kokoweef.
Few collectors were willing to make the descent. To reach the collecting area, Ron first climbed approximately 80 feet down a rope ladder from an area known simply as "The Bridge." He recalled the ladder twisting and spinning unexpectedly during the climb, making every descent memorable.
At the bottom, he searched through ancient cave sediments for stalactites that had naturally fallen countless years earlier while also recovering freshly exposed material from newly blasted mining areas before it could be destroyed.

Two Historic Collecting Areas
Ron primarily collected from two distinct locations.
The Red Site
Located within the main Kokoweef Cave, this area produced spectacular red-banded Cave Coral. Ron believed the rich coloration resulted from iron-rich red clay surrounding the formations.
Crystal Cavern
Crystal Cavern was an entirely separate cave system, disconnected from the main Kokoweef Cave. Material from Crystal Cavern contains a higher percentage of calcite relative to aragonite, producing brilliant white specimens often lined with sparkling calcite crystals. Some even display a brief phosphorescent afterglow after exposure to ultraviolet light, making them among the most unusual pieces in the collection.

About Kokoweef Cave Coral
Kokoweef Cave Coral consists primarily of calcite and aragonite, with many formations beginning to develop as far back as the Late Jurassic, approximately 155 million years ago.
One of the most fascinating characteristics appears under ultraviolet light, where many specimens fluoresce bright green, with some displaying a short-lived phosphorescent glow after the UV source is removed.
Because the material formed as layered stalactites, orientation dramatically changes the patterns revealed during cutting.
Cross-cutting often produces floating orb-like structures and concentric rings, while lengthwise cuts reveal flowing bands in cream, tan, brown, and occasionally deep red. Larger specimens make striking display pieces, while smaller sections are ideal for cabochons and freeform lapidary work.
Being composed primarily of calcite, Kokoweef Cave Coral is relatively soft compared to agate, making it easy to cut, shape, and achieve an exceptional polish.

Ethics & Legality
Most cave formations should never be collected. Active stalactites require thousands of years to form, and removing them permanently damages cave ecosystems. There are now federal laws that prevent the collection of cave material (FCRPA) act of 1988.
The Kokoweef material is different.
These specimens were recovered during historic mining operations in the 1970s from areas that had already been blasted or irreversibly disturbed while miners searched for the Lost River of Gold. Rather than being removed from an untouched cave, they were salvaged from material that otherwise would have been destroyed.
For that reason, Kokoweef Cave Coral represents one of the few historic cave materials considered both a legal and ethical source for lapidary use.
