Fossil Agatized Coral Rare color Geode Cut & Polished
Beautiful finger specimen with exceptional interior preservation. A smooth waxy layer of common opal overlies botryoidal chalcedony. Visible banding to the naked eye with tight banding revealed under UV light. These exceptionally rare Agatized corals formed about 25 to 30 million years ago when Tampa Bay was covered by warm shallow seas. In deep marine pockets, silica replaced the original coral structure and created chalcedony in remarkable blue and black tones that occur almost exclusively in underwater deposits.
Some specimens contain opal, drusy quartz, or trace minerals and may fluoresce under ultraviolet light, reflecting the unique chemistry of their formation (see this specimens specific characteristics below).
